Jack had managed to pilot his aircraft through an uncompromising air battle, and Ken’s use of the term ‘scarecrow’ is of particular interest. Bomber crews had been told that the Germans were firing up large shells that would resemble an aircraft exploding, as an attack on the morale of the bomber aircrews. However the evidence for the use of such a device is scant and Ken had guessed correctly. It had been an exploding bomber.

The losses on the Trappes raid were not the only casualties for Bomber Command that night. Three aircraft on SOE operations failed to return, including a Stirling from Dennis Field’s 90 Squadron. Fortunately the entire crew survived to fight another day, although five men were subsequently captured.
